ASK A QUESTION

I am not a qualified plumber what do I do?

The PIRB Registration process is not an exclusive process it is an inclusive process. We promote and encourage the upliftment of the skills development of individuals in the plumbing sector in terms of the National Qualifications Framework. Provided you have 5 years or more practical experience in the industry and you are able to prove this you are eligible to registered under the category as a Plumber (Probationary). You will however be required to sit your trade test within 12 months of you been registered and further to that you will be required to work under the mentorship/supervision of a qualified plumber.

What is the difference between a category of a Licensed Plumber and a Qualified Plumber?

Person applying for registration under the Licensed Plumber Category and the Qualified plumbers Category should have passed the relevant trade test as specified in the Manpower training act section 28 or 13 and/or have obtained a plumber qualification in terms of the Skills Development Act. In other words if you are registered in either category you are proved proof that you are a qualified plumber. The problem however arises that currently many qualified plumbers do not know or understand the laws, regulations and standards that govern the installation of plumbing works and this leads to poor installations which results in health and safety issues for the consumer and the strain that poor installation puts on our water and sewage systems. The problem is further compounded in that a person can (have) qualify as plumber with out been able to read or write.

In saying this how could the PIRB issue Plumbing Certificates of Compliance to qualified plumbers who do not understand the plumbing laws, regulations or standards let alone qualified plumbers who are unable to read or write. The integrity of the PIRB's Plumbing Certificate of Compliance will be totally compromised if this was done. It was therefore that a Licensed Plumber was created. To obtain this category of registration the qualified plumber would be required to sit an open book multiple answer theory test within 12 months after been registered on this category. Only Licensed P lumbers may purchase and issue certificates of compliance.
